Today, our hearts at Samui Elephant Haven are heavy with both joy and sorrow as we mark what would have been Luna’s fourth birthday. Luna, our precious elephant calf, may no longer walk among us, but her spirit continues to illuminate our sanctuary and inspire our mission.
Born four years ago on this day, Luna brought an indescribable brightness to our lives. From the moment she took her first wobbly steps, she captured the hearts of everyone at the sanctuary. Her playful antics, curious nature, and gentle soul reminded us daily of the wonder and beauty of these magnificent creatures we dedicate our lives to protecting.
Luna’s name, meaning “moon” in many languages, could not have been more fitting. Like her namesake, she lit up even the darkest nights with her presence. Her expressive eyes seemed to hold the wisdom of the ages, even as a young calf. Her trunk, always exploring and seeking the wonders around her, became a symbol of the connection between humans and elephants that we strive to nurture here at Samui Elephant Haven.

Tragically, Luna’s time with us was cut short by the cruel hand of the Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV), a devastating disease that continues to threaten young elephants worldwide. Despite our team’s tireless efforts and the outpouring of support from our global community, we couldn’t save our little moon from this relentless illness.
The pain of losing Luna is still raw, but today, on her birthday, we choose to celebrate the joy she brought into our lives. We remember her gleeful splashes in the mud, her gentle interactions with her elephant herd, and her comical interactions with her favorite caretakers.
Luna’s passing has strengthened our resolve to fight against EEHV along with the many other threats facing elephants. In her memory, we continue to intensify our efforts in providing a safe place where elephants can be free of the abuse many have forced upon them in the name of entertainment. We are determined to ensure that future generations of elephants will have a chance to grow, thrive, and live full lives.
To our lovely Luna: though you are no longer with us physically, your spirit lives on in every corner of this sanctuary. The love you inspired continues to fuel our work. We imagine you now, running free in endless green fields, with all the tires your heart desires, your happy trumpets echoing in a perfect elephant paradise.
Happy birthday, Little Luna.
For those wishing to honor Luna’s memory, we invite you to support our ongoing efforts in elephant conservation. Together, we can ensure that Luna’s short, but impactful, life continues to make a difference for elephants everywhere.
With love and remembrance, The Samui Elephant Haven Family.
